Figure 1.6 Immigrants, non-immigrants and non-permanent residents - Citizenship
Description
Figure 1.6 demonstrates the breakdown of the immigrants, non-immigrants and non-permanent residents in Canada by citizenship. It broadly delineates them according to whether they are Canadian or non-Canadian citizens.
The population in private households can be categorized as:
- Non-immigrant population (persons who are Canadian citizens by birth).
- Immigrant population (persons who are, or have been, landed immigrants/permanent residents): Canadian citizens by naturalization; not Canadian citizens (period of immigration before 2008 or period of immigration between 2008 and 2011 (landed immigrants/permanent residents must reside in Canada for a minimum of three years before they have the right to apply for Canadian citizenship).
- Non-permanent residents (non-permanent residents refers to a person from another country who, at the time of the survey, has a work or study permit or who is a refugee claimant, and any non-Canadian-born family member living in Canada with them).
The immigrant population (persons who are, or have been, landed immigrants/permanent residents) and who have become Canadian citizens by naturalization are considered to be part of the Canadian citizens' category. The remaining immigrant population and non-permanent residents are not considered Canadian citizens.
