« Réserve » comprend les six types de subdivisions de recensement (SDR) légalement affiliées aux Premières Nations ou aux bandes indiennes, c'est-à-dire réserve indienne (IRI), établissement indien (S-É) (sauf pour les quatre établissements indiens de Champagne Landing 10, Klukshu, Two Mile and Two and One-Half Mile Village et Kloo Lake du Yukon), Indian government district (IGD), terres réservées aux Cris (TC), terres réservées aux Naskapis (TK) et Nisga'a land (NL).

« Membre d'une Première Nation ou bande indienne » indique si la personne est membre ou non d'une Première Nation ou d'une bande indienne. On définit une bande indienne comme un groupe d'individus au profit duquel des terres ont été réservées ou dont l'argent est détenu par la Couronne, ou qui a été désigné comme bande aux termes de la Loi sur les Indiens. De nombreuses bandes indiennes ont décidé de s'appeler Première Nation et ont modifié le nom de leur bande en conséquence. Après l'amendement de la Loi sur les Indiens en 1985 (projet de loi C-31), plusieurs bandes indiennes ont exercé leur droit à établir leur propre code d'appartenance, en vertu duquel il n'était plus toujours nécessaire pour une personne appartenant à la bande d'être Indien inscrit aux termes de la Loi sur les Indiens.
Les chiffres pour les Premières Nations et les bandes indiennes particulières rendent compte des réponses autodéclarées à la question 21 du Recensement de 2016 et peuvent différer des dossiers administratifs tenus par les Premières Nations et les bandes indiennes elles-mêmes. Les réponses à la question sur l'appartenance à une Première Nation ou à une bande indienne peuvent comprendre des réponses générales comme « Algonquin » ou « Cri », plutôt que la mention d'une Première Nation ou d'une bande indienne particulière. Par conséquent, le nombre de membres d'une Première Nation ou d'une bande indienne particulière peut être sous-estimé dans le recensement. Les utilisateurs doivent aussi savoir que les estimations relatives à cette variable sont touchées par le dénombrement partiel de certaines réserves indiennes et de certains établissements indiens dans le Recensement de la population.
Par conséquent, les utilisateurs des données détaillées sur les Premières Nations et les bandes indiennes du Recensement de 2016 devraient savoir que ces données ne devraient pas être utilisées comme chiffres officiels des Premières Nations et des bandes indiennes au Canada. Ils devraient consulter les Premières Nations ou les bandes indiennes individuellement pour obtenir des chiffres sur leurs membres.
RÉSERVES INDIENNES ET ÉTABLISSEMENTS INDIENS PARTIELLEMENT DÉNOMBRÉS
Les utilisateurs doivent prendre note que les chiffres correspondant à cette variable subissent plus que les autres l'incidence du dénombrement partiel d'un certain nombre de réserves indiennes et d'établissements indiens pour le recensement. L'ampleur de cette incidence dépendra de la région géographique à l'étude. Selon la variable et/ou le groupe, la question liée aux réserves partiellement dénombrées a surtout une incidence sur les estimations du recensement pour la population d'identité autochtone dans son ensemble, la population s'identifiant aux Premières Nations (Indien de l'Amérique du Nord), la population ayant une ascendance autochtone dans son ensemble, la population ayant une ascendance liée aux Premières Nations (Indien de l'Amérique du Nord), la population des Indiens inscrits ou des traités, la population ayant déclaré être membre d'une Première Nation ou d'une bande indienne et la population vivant dans les réserves indiennes et établissements indiens. Le dénombrement partiel d'un certain nombre de réserves indiennes et d'établissements indiens dans le recensement peut également avoir une plus grande incidence sur les chiffres correspondant à d'autres variables liées aux peuples autochtones, telles que la langue et le logement de bande. Cette question n'a pas d'incidence importante sur les estimations des variables relatives aux populations des Inuits ou des Métis, puisque généralement ces populations ne vivent pas dans les réserves.
En 2016, un total de 14 réserves indiennes et d'établissements indiens ont été « partiellement dénombrés » au Recensement. Le dénombrement n'a pas été autorisé dans certaines réserves indiennes et dans certains établissements indiens ou a été interrompu avant d'être mené à terme.
