Earnings and Incomes of Canadians Over the Past Quarter Century, 2006 Census: Earnings

Immigrants

As they integrate into the Canadian labour market, many recent immigrants initially face difficulties finding full-time full-year employment as well as locating jobs that pay relatively high wages.

For these reasons, the bulk of this section compares median earnings of recent immigrant earners in the core working age (age group 25 to 54), whether or not they were employed on a full-time full-year basis, to those of their Canadian-born counterparts. Self-employed individuals are included.

'Recent immigrants' are those who arrived during the five-year period between 2000 and 2004. They do not include those who arrived in 2005 because many of these would not have had the opportunity to work for a full year.1
